Philip Colbert

Philip Colbert (b. 1979), often described as “Andy Warhol’s godson,” is recognized as a contemporary master of pop art. He studied philosophy at the University of St Andrews in Scotland. In his work, the artist explores the patterns of contemporary digital culture and its relationship to art history.“I became an artist when I became a lobster.” The creator of the famous cartoon lobster persona gained recognition through his energetic, innovative approach to painting and popular culture theory. Referring to early pop-art artists such as Richard Hamilton, Roy Lichtenstein, and James Rosenquist, Colbert’s paintings combine themes of high art, drawn from old-master painting and contemporary art theory, with everyday symbols of contemporary mass culture, seen through the eyes of the artist’s alter ego – the lobster.Colbert has collaborated with luxury brands including Rolex, Montblanc, Christian Louboutin, and COMME des GARÇONS. His works have been presented at numerous exhibitions and art fairs worldwide, including Art Basel, Frieze London, Art16 London, as well as at the Saatchi Gallery and Tate Modern in London.
