RECORD: “Shot Sage Blue Marilyn” (1964) sold on 9 May 2022 at Christie's in New York for USD 195.04 million, setting a record as the most expensive work by an American artist ever sold at auction and the highest-priced 20th-century artwork at auction. The sale also had a philanthropic dimension – the proceeds went to the Thomas and Doris Ammann Foundation, which supports children through health and education programmes, and the buyer was able to indicate the cause to which the foundation would allocate 20% of the proceeds.
The portrait of Katie Jones by Andy Warhol presented here belongs to the group of his most iconic works depicting celebrities and prominent figures, made with acrylic paint and screen printing at his New York Factory. Katie – full name Catherine Claire Schlumberger Jones – was a photographer, patron and art collector, and above all a member of Warhol's close circle of friends and acquaintances. She came from a wealthy, aristocratic family of an oil magnate with French roots.
